Gifts with Responsibility: A Campaign to Prevent Youth Gambling

An international alliance of 66 gaming entities and groups has initiated a U.S. campaign to elevate consciousness regarding the dangers of youth gambling. The initiative, titled “Gifts with Responsibility,” underscores studies connecting early gambling engagement with a heightened likelihood of developing gambling issues in adulthood.

The objective is to deter adults from gifting lottery slips to minors, particularly during festive periods. The campaign stresses that lottery items are unsuitable for children and that even initial exposure can result in future problems. This message will be disseminated through various avenues, including public awareness broadcasts, digital media initiatives, and even merchant education.

This campaign holds particular significance now, as gambling gains increasing accessibility and social acceptance globally. It serves as a timely prompt that safeguarding young individuals from the potential detriments of gambling is crucial.

Numerous esteemed lottery entities throughout the United States and Canada, in conjunction with global counterparts, have pledged their support to this endeavor aimed at curbing gambling among minors. It has garnered notable commendation and backing from prominent stakeholders such as the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, the World Lottery Association, and European Lotteries. Keith Whyte, the Executive Director of the NCPG, conveyed his appreciation, stating, “We are profoundly grateful for the immense response from the lottery sector and beyond. Through collaborative efforts, we can amplify this message and guarantee public comprehension of the genuine hazards gambling presents to youths.”

This undertaking comes on the heels of the NCPG’s latest proclamation regarding their Autumn 2023 Agile Grant disbursements. This initiative will allocate $176,000 among five non-profit groups across the US, all diligently striving to tackle the multifaceted challenge of compulsive gambling.
