The London-based firm, Entain, which operates in the United States under the BetMGM brand in collaboration with MGM Resorts, has been given a full operating permit in Nevada.
The permit was awarded to Entain on May 16th after a second review where Entain’s top executives, including Chairman Barry Gibson, Interim CEO Stella Davies, and General Counsel Simon Singh, presented their case. The Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) unanimously approved Entain’s permit on May 1st.
Nevada is considered one of the most profitable states in the US for operators. Gambling income reached a record $15.52 billion in 2023, a 4.6% rise from the previous year’s record.
Entain’s partnership with MGM Resorts under the BetMGM brand previously functioned under a two-year permit and more recently under a three-year permit that ended this month. The temporary permit reflected the NGC’s concerns about Entain’s operations in unregulated markets. The NGC believes that this situation has now ended.
Erika Okberg, a legal representative for Entain, stated, “The firm has not only made significant progress in resolving some past issues, but they have also taken accountability and learned from their errors.”
Entain was initially granted a two-year permit in 2019. At that time, Entain was still known as GVC and was led by a distinct team. BetMGM commenced operations in Nevada in March 2020. Entain subsequently received a three-year permit in 2021. Presently, the company is registered with the NGC and can operate without restrictions.
In May 2024, Entain announced that they had ceased operations in 140 nations where they were not authorized to conduct business.
Gibson remarked, “This decision cost us a substantial amount of funds. We experienced a loss of $100 million in profits, but you cannot place a value on acting ethically.”
“My team was in agreement with this strategy. If we are going to assert that we are doing the right thing, we must actually follow through. This entails withdrawing from locations where we were generating revenue, and we accomplished that.”
Gibson informed the NGC that 95% of their revenue now originates from regions where gambling is permitted.
Commissioner Brian Crowley stated, “This serves as an excellent illustration of how to ensure that your company is managed effectively, adheres to regulations, and acts ethically. It is truly impressive. I am aware that they relinquished numerous opportunities to generate profits.”
