The ex-leader of Suncity Group’s high-roller areas, Alvin Chau, was handed an 18-year prison term by the Macau Court of First Instance. The charges against him included illegal gambling offenses.

Chau was ordered to serve 18 years behind bars and was also required to provide financial compensation to both the Macau government and five Macau gaming licensees.

Chau was among a group of 11 individuals apprehended by Macau law enforcement in 2021. They were accused of establishing an illicit live betting platform in the Philippines. This platform allegedly enticed customers from mainland China through VIP rooms located in Macau.

Following his arrest, Chau stepped down from his positions as chairman of Suncity and Summit Ascent.

Suncity, in the wake of these arrests, discontinued its high-roller room operations and shifted its focus towards resort development.

Chau faced a total of 229 charges related to illegal gambling and 54 charges of serious fraud.
