A California mother, Rebecca Taylor, has initiated a collective legal action against Apple, claiming that the tech giant is participating in or perpetrating offenses by advertising gambling items to minors through its application marketplace by providing games that incorporate loot box mechanisms.
The legal action was initiated on Tuesday (June 15) in the United States Federal Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division.
The essence of Taylor’s argument is that the information Apple provides for loot boxes resembles that of established gambling products.
“Even Apple itself suggests that loot boxes in its app store games are a form of gambling,” the legal filing asserts. “Similar to the California State Lottery, Apple mandates that its app developers disclose the ‘likelihood of winning’ specific items in loot boxes distributed in games they disseminate.”
