Ex-Chief of Ukraine’s Gaming Oversight Body Apprehended for Graft
Following an inquiry by investigators from Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), a KRAIL official was apprehended. NABU stated the official was the acting head of the regulator at the time of his arrest.
The apprehension occurred last week and was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine.
NABU said its investigators received information this summer about a system of bribes being taken in exchange for issuing gaming licenses and permits. They then developed and implemented a series of covert investigations using undercover detectives.
As part of the inquiry, detectives unearthed evidence suggesting that a member of KRAIL offered to issue licenses and permits for the operation of gaming venues in Chernihiv City and Zaporizhzhia Oblast for approximately $90,000.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, or NABU, is conducting an investigation into a suspected criminal organization engaged in illicit gambling activities.
This group, known as KRAIL, came to prominence following the legalization of gambling in Ukraine last year.
KRAIL has already taken steps to combat illegal gambling by blocking access to 594 websites.
In July, the Ukrainian government also implemented a 10% levy on all forms of gambling.
